As Malaysia’s leading integrated M&E and construction experts, we at iDFAC know that a world-class kitchen is powered by a world-class electrical plan. A kitchen is the most power-hungry room in your home, and planning its electrical system before you start renovating is non-negotiable. This guide will provide you with the ultimate checklist for a safe, functional, and future-proof kitchen.
You’ve spent weeks perfecting the design of your new kitchen. You’ve chosen the perfect cabinet materials, the most beautiful countertop, and the ideal layout. But have you thought about what’s happening behind the walls? In the excitement of design, the electrical plan is one of the most frequently overlooked aspects of a kitchen renovation—and it’s a mistake that can lead to daily frustration and even safety hazards.
You cannot finalize your electrical plan until you have chosen your major appliances. The power requirements and dimensions of your refrigerator, hob, hood, oven, microwave, and dishwasher will dictate the type and location of the outlets you need.
Modern kitchens are filled with high-wattage appliances. In Malaysia, our standard is 240V/50Hz, and certain appliances require their own dedicated circuit to prevent overloading the system and tripping your circuit breaker.
Your electrical plan must include dedicated circuits for:
Electric Hob / Induction Cooker
Built-in Oven
Instant Water Heater (for the sink)
Large Microwave Ovens
The number one complaint in a poorly planned kitchen is a lack of power outlets. Think through your workflow and ensure you have power points in these key locations :
Above the Countertop: For small appliances like your kettle, toaster, blender, and coffee machine. Consider a power track for maximum flexibility. You should have at least 3-4 outlets here.
Inside the Island: If you have a kitchen island, it needs power for small appliances or charging devices.
Under the Cabinet: For built-in appliances like a water filtration system or a waste disposal unit.
Near the Hob: A dedicated outlet for the range hood.
Appliance Garage: A dedicated spot in your pantry or cabinet for charging cordless vacuums or other devices.
Great kitchen lighting is about more than a single fluorescent tube in the middle of the ceiling. A professional lighting plan uses three layers to create a space that is both functional and inviting :
Ambient Lighting: This is the overall illumination for the room, usually provided by recessed downlights or a central ceiling fixture.
Task Lighting: This is focused, bright light for your main work areas. The most important task lighting is under-cabinet LED strips, which illuminate your countertops without casting shadows.
Accent Lighting: This is decorative lighting used to highlight features, such as pendant lights over an island or lights inside glass-fronted cabinets.
In Malaysia, electrical work is typically priced per “point.” A standard power point installation can cost between RM100 – RM150, while a lighting point may be RM65 – RM90. A dedicated point for a high-power appliance like a water heater will cost more.
Your kitchen’s electrical system is its central nervous system. It must be planned with foresight and executed with precision. At iDFAC, our in-house M&E engineers work hand-in-hand with our designers to ensure your kitchen is as smart and safe as it is beautiful.
Don’t let a poor electrical plan compromise your dream kitchen. Contact iDFAC today for an integrated design and engineering consultation.
